The Forat de Bernia
In this post, we want you to discover an impressive natural balcony to the Mediterranean sea: the Forat de Bernia.
The Forat de Bernia is located in the Sierra de Bernia (Bernia mountain range), which runs perpendicular to the coast and whose 11km pass through the municipalities of Alcalalí, Jalón, Benissa, Calpe, Callosa d’en Sarriá and Tàrbena.
This mountain route, with an approximate duration of 3h, starts in Cases de Bernia, a district belonging to the municipality of Jalón, where you must get by car and in which you will find esplanades to park your vehicle for free.
Once there, you will immediately see the sign which marks the route beginning and then, you must go to the fountain of Bernia. There, you must continue through the stairs over the fountain and, although sometimes the path does not seem to be very clear, if you follow the white and yellow markings which indicate the route, you will know that you are on the right path. The trail will lead you towards the mountain walls and after passing between a rock and a cave, you will find the cavity of El Forat de Bernia.
The Forat is a tunnel which goes across the mountain and in which you will have to enter initially crouched, but that soon increases its size until opening a natural window to an impressive and unforgettable panoramic view of the Costa Blanca.
We must mention that very close to El Forat de Bernia, you can also see cave paintings or visit the ruins of the Castle of Bernia (or Fort de Bèrnia) which offers beautiful views from Jávea to Alicante and on clear days… even the island of Ibiza!
In order to regain strength after your walk, wether the restaurant located in Cases de Bérnia wether any of those located in the road from Jalón, offer typical homemade food which will allow you to taste delicious local products.
As after the route you will need to rest and relax 😉, we suggest you some accommodations to complete your countryside experience on the Costa Blanca:
